He was educated by the Jesuits, and at twenty-seven he obtained a public office at Martinique, but it was not till his return to Paris in 1760 with the rank of commissioner-general that he made a public appearance as an author. This person, who had just spoken in such a serious tone, was Jacques Cazotte. He was the author of a strange book: Le Diable amoureux, which had caused a stir; but he was taken for a dreamer and some suspected him of belonging to the sect of the Illumines.
